The Five Reiki Principles for Everyday Life

Reiki is more than a healing technique; it is a way of living in deeper harmony with yourself and the world. One of the simplest and most beautiful aspects of Reiki is the Five Reiki Principles. These gentle guidelines invite us to live each day with more awareness, kindness and trust.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing that works with universal life force energy. During a session, the practitioner gently places hands on or just above the body to channel this energy where it is most needed. Many people experience Reiki as deeply relaxing, nurturing and spiritually supportive.

Beyond treatments, Reiki offers a path of personal and spiritual growth. The Five Principles are part of this path.

The Five Reiki Principles

The principles are often introduced in a simple, daily form beginning with the words “Just for today…”. This reminds us that we do not have to be perfect forever; we simply begin again each day.

Let us look at each one more closely.

Just for Today, I Will Not Worry

Worry pulls us out of the present moment and into imagined futures. It can create stress in the body and cloud our mind. This principle does not ask you to deny your feelings; it invites you to loosen the grip of worry, even for one day, or one breath.

When you notice worry rising, you can pause, place a hand on your heart, and gently say to yourself: “Just for today, I choose trust.” For many, this trust includes Source, Spirit, God or simply the deeper wisdom of life itself.

Just for Today, I Will Not Be Angry

Anger is a natural human emotion. The principle does not deny anger, but invites us not to be ruled by it. Instead of letting anger harden into resentment or reaction, we are invited to breathe, feel the emotion in the body, and respond from a more conscious place.

In practice, this might mean counting a few breaths before speaking, walking outside to clear your head, or journaling what you feel. Over time, the fire of anger can transform into clear boundaries and compassionate action.

Just for Today, I Will Be Grateful

Gratitude shifts our focus from what is missing to what is here. It opens the heart and changes the way we see our life. This principle encourages us to notice simple blessings: a safe place to sleep, a warm cup of tea, a kind word, a sunrise, the breath in our lungs.

A daily gratitude practice does not need to be complicated. You can simply name three things you are grateful for each morning or evening. Gratitude is a powerful magnetic force – it tends to attract more experiences to be grateful for.

Just for Today, I Will Do My Work Honestly

Honesty here is not only about telling the truth; it is also about integrity and presence. Whatever your work is – raising children, caring for others, working in an office or offering healing – this principle invites you to show up with sincerity, transparency and heart.

When we work honestly, we align our actions with our values. At the end of the day this brings a deep sense of fulfilment and peace.

Just for Today, I Will Be Kind to Every Living Thing

Kindness is a powerful healer. This principle invites us to extend compassion not only to people we love, but also to strangers, animals, plants and yes, ourselves. Small acts of kindness – a gentle word, a patient pause, a smile – can ripple out in ways we may never see.

This principle does not mean allowing harm or losing boundaries. True kindness includes honesty and respect, for ourselves and others.

Living the Principles, Not Perfecting Them

You do not need to live these principles perfectly. They are not rules; they are invitations. Some days you may feel full of gratitude and kindness; other days you may feel heavy, worried or angry. That is part of being human. The practice is to return, again and again, to the intention behind the principles.

A beautiful way to work with them is to repeat them quietly at the start of your day, with hands on your heart, and to notice how they begin to shape your choices.
